Join Us for a Special Film Screening!
We are excited to invite conference participants to a FREE screening of the documentary “Ah Cheung: Wings of Hope” (2024), a documentary about a late Hong Kong disability-rights advocate LAW Wai Cheung, Willy (Ah Cheung). This exceptional event is a collaboration between HKU’s Journalism and Media Studies Centre and the Hong Kong Society for Rehabilitation.
Led by Oscar-winning filmmaker and Director of HKU’s Journalism and Media Studies Centre, Ruby Yang; Ah Cheung: Wings of Hope (2024) is directed by Hong Kong’s emerging director SO Ka Ue, in collaboration with Macau’s animation director WONG Weng Chon. The film combines live-action and animation to portray Ah Cheung’s advocacy of independent living, showcasing the evolution of disability rights and society in Hong Kong over the past few decades. The film screening (52 minutes) is followed by a sharing session with the director of the film, hosted by Mr. CHEUNG Wai-leung Benny, Vice-President, Executive Committee member, The Hong Kong Society for Rehabilitation.

Abstract:

A stalwart in the city’s history of disability advocacy, Ah Cheung believed that people with disabilities should have the right to make their own choices and explore life’s possibilities, and made it a lifelong mission to advocate for independent living.
