The Montessori Way Boosts the Confidence of People with Dementia

People with dementia face different degrees of difficulties in life. Establishing a calm and relaxing environment, together with fun activities, can effectively stop responsive behaviours such as wandering and repetitively asking questions.

To amplify the independent living skills of people with dementia, the Cheng Tak Yim Day Rehabilitation and Care Centre renovated the physical environment of the Centre and apply the innovative, user-centric “DementiAbility Methods: The Montessori WayTM“. The corridors were adorned with colourful, three-dimensional mural paintings to stimulate the senses of sight and touch of the elderly and people with dementia as part of their therapeutic exercise and cognitive training.

This training is “mistake-free” based, which means the therapists will not point out any mistakes made by the patients during the training process. Instead, they will allow them to discover their mistakes on their own. The aim is to enhance their confidence and encourage them to try harder to improve their memory and cognitive ability. The display of directory signs and the exhibition of visual arts work are intended to strengthen their sense of security and achievement, thus enabling them to lead a more independent and meaningful life.
