Stroke happens suddenly and deprives patients’ abilities at one moment. Some patients even die. There are 20,000 people hospitalized due to stroke annually and has a worrying trend of increasing number of young patients.

World Stroke Day, which is set as October 29, hopes to raise public awareness on stroke and appreciates the “Heroes” in stroke rehabilitation. Through listening to the stories of stroke patients, it is hoped that you will also understand how fruitful their lives are and how they become their own heroes!

“Love yourself” – Tony, Fashion designer

Stroke happened to Tony in 2010, yet the physical inconvenience and Aphasia brought by stroke didn’t bring him a broken spirit. Three years ago, he took the challenge to join Stroke Choir organized by our Society which uses music therapy to help stroke patients rebuild their speech ability.

Moreover, stroke doesn’t stop Tony from designing. He participated in “Youreable Fashion Design 2018” and designed a set of sportswear, namely “Hero soughs”. The heart logo in the sportswear expresses his message to stroke patients: “You need to love yourself and never give up on your dreams.”

“Accept the reality, but not bow to reality” – Edith, IT strongwoman

During the peak of Edith’s career, stroke happened to her suddenly. Her right body was completely paralyzed, and she had difficulties in speech, memory, understanding and cognition. The strongwoman failed down, but her indomitable spirit brought positive impact. Even though she has difficulty in moving around, she is still able to re-enter the community, and even finished a master and a doctoral degree

She was an IT elite, and now she even participates in social welfare and education sector after stroke. From “beneficiary” to “servant”, Edith now takes part in policy initiatives work of stroke patients, people with disabilities and elderly. In the past ten years and so, Edith had attained different awards, including Outstanding Woman Professionals and Medal of Honour from HKSAR, Outstanding PolyU Alumni Award.

Edith is now the Vice Chairperson of The Hong Kong Society for Rehabilitation and become a wonderful hero after stroke. She wrote a book last year to share her life miracle as a stroke survivor.

The Hong Kong Society for Rehabilitation provides holistic community-based rehabilitation services for stroke patients which suit their distinctive needs in different stages, including rehabilitation treatment after discharge, self-management of rehabilitation training, mutual help groups of patients, community resources, vocational training and referrals services etc.

The Society also launch innovative stroke rehabilitation services, including:

Stroke choir: The first stroke choir in Hong Kong which combines music therapy and community music to improve the speech ability of stroke patients and build up their confidence in integrating into the community.

Speech therapy: Hong Kong Society for Rehabilitation developed an application for speech rehabilitation which improve the communication ability of stroke and traumatic brain patients; speech therapists provide one-to-one and group speech therapeutic training.
